Ecotoxicology Service

CEMAS carries out a range of studies to evaluate the aquatic and terrestrial ecotoxicological effects of substances, including plant protection products and active ingredients, industrial chemical products, effluents and waste-waters. These studies are designed specifically to fulfil requirements for:

  • Registrations for Plant Protection Products and Biocides
  • New Chemical Notifications
  • Registrations for Veterinary Medicinal Products
  • Offshore Chemicals Notifications
  • Toxicity-Based Discharge-Consents and Direct Toxicity Assessments (DTA)

Section Capabilities

The Ecotoxicology Section works in compliance with GLP.

Study Types:

  • Studies are carried out to determine effects on algae and invertebrates in the aquatic environment, and soil microorganisms, earthworms and non-target arthropods in the terrestrial environment. CEMAS has a fully equipped analytical facility to support these studies.
  • All work at CEMAS is conducted according to the principles of GLP, and internationally accepted test guidelines are followed. However, we commonly carry out non-routine testing and are interested in conducting studies or trials to satisfy specific customer requirements.
  • Laboratory-based studies are carried out within environmentally controlled chambers in the CEMAS Ecotoxicology Unit. Semi-field and field trials, integrated pest management (IPM) studies and litter decomposition studies are carried out at other suitable locations as required.
  • Both the sensitivity and consistency of response of the test systems are regularly checked at CEMAS using reference test items. The results are compared with historical data and published values. Reference test reports are available for inspection.
  • CEMAS understands the importance of rapid turnaround times on studies and prompt reporting to meet the client's submission deadlines.
